Amusing Story of the Army Corps of Engineers
The same geniuses behind the faulty levees in New Orleans, and for that matter, the entire disastrous Mississippi floodplain (which results in tragic and entirely preventable erosion of the Louisiana delta, a massive anoxic zone forming off of the Gulf Coast, etc), have now apparently taken to mining public beaches with explosives. No, seriously. In Surf City, NJ, they were supposed to dump sand on the beaches, presumably to fight erosion. Well, they got their sand....
SURF CITY, N.J. (AP) - The Army Corps of Engineers, which accidentally dumped sand filled with old military ordnance on Surf City's beach, now wants the town to help pay to remove it.
.... Along with thousands of World War One era explosives.
the Army Corps unwittingly took sand from an offshore site where the military had dumped explosives decades ago.
More than 1,100 explosives, each about 4 inches in diameter and 8 inches long, were removed from Surf City's beach.
Surf City reopened its beach over Memorial Day weekend with new rules: Don't use metal detectors, don't dig more than a foot into the sand, and report anything suspicious to lifeguards.
And now the Corps. wants them to pay for its mistake. With money this time, not human lives, but hey, those explosives aren't going anywhere until they do. It's almost like a mob shakedown.
Army Corps spokesman Khaalid Walls said local governments are routinely asked to help pay for projects.
"That's protocol. All our projects are cost-shared," Walls said.
Hilarious. Honestly, why do we pay these people? They couldn't dig a hole without creating a body to fill it.
